Who Can Apply for SASSA Child Grant?

Must be a South African citizen, recognized refugee, or permanent resident.
Preference for ID submission, but applications can be submitted without.
Child must be under 18 years old.
Primary caregiver must live in South Africa with child.
Child cannot live in state institution.
Individuals must meet means test criteria of R60,000 for singles and R120,000 for married individuals.

Steps to apply for Child Support Grant:

Get an Application Form
- Proceed to the nearest SASSA office or download the application form from their official website. Have with you all necessary documents to assist in the completion of the application form correctly.
Fill Up the Application Form
- Fill up the application form carefully with the required information; ensure all the particulars provided are correct and legible. Proper information regarding the child and caregiver is essential to ensure no delay or rejection of the application.
Collect the Documents Required in Support of Your Application
- IDs of the caregiver and child
- Proof of residence
- Medical certificate (if applicable)
- Proof of income (latest payslip, bank statements, etc.)
- Any other documents as SASSA may instruct
Submit Your Application
- Hand in the completed application form, together with all supporting documents, to your nearest SASSA office. Remember to make copies of all documents for your safe keeping.
Interview and Verification
- After submitting your application, an interview may be conducted. Verification will be done by SASSA for all the information supplied together with the means-testing and eligibility for the grant.
Wait for the Decision
- After the interview and verification, a decision will be communicated to you in writing by SASSA. If approved, the grant will be paid into your bank account by SASSA or paid through another SASSA payment mechanism.

What is the SASSA Child Support Grant amount?

The SASSA Child Support Grant amount is R530 per month per child, with a top-up of R760 for 2025. The grant can be paid in cash or electronically, with additional benefits expected as SASSA increases grant payments for 2025. Applicants can specify payment methods during application.
